Aanstaande zondag wordt hij 72. Bill Withers. Maker van ‘Ain’t No Sunshine’, ‘Better Off Dead’, ‘Grandma’s Hands’ en veel meer wonderschone liedjes, tot hij het vijfentwintig jaar geleden mooi geweest vond. Blanke platenbazen die hem wel even zouden uitleggen hoe het werkte, hoe hij moest klinken - hij bedankte voor de eer en ging voor zijn kinderen zorgen. Damani Baker en Alex Vlack (hier geinterviewd) maakten vorig jaar de documentaire ‘Still Bill’. Een Nederlandse dvd-release lijkt er voorlopig nog niet in te zitten, de film is wel te koop op stillbillthemovie.com. Goed nieuws: de NPS vertoont hem vanavond in Het Uur van de Wolf.

Na zijn eerste twee studioplaten ‘Just As I Am’ en ‘Still Bill’ verscheen in 1973 een live album, ‘Live At Carnegie Hall’. Opgenomen op een regenachtige avond in oktober 1972. Bill Withers op z’n best. Alleen al geweldig vanwege het eerste nummer van kant A, ‘Use Me’. Na een lange uitvoering van het nummer bedankt hij het publiek voor het trotseren van de regen en vraagt een applaus voor de band. Hij houdt van ze. Dan nog een diepe ‘Yeah…’ en het wordt stil. Het publiek wordt onrustig. ‘One more time?’, vraagt de zanger. Instemmend geschreeuw uit de zaal. ‘One more time’, concludeert Withers, waarop ‘Use Me’ opnieuw wordt ingezet. Erna volgt zo’n concert waar je bij had willen zijn.

Wat een held. Vanavond, 23.20 uur, Nederland 2.
